It's here, the rain that is. And with that we're nearing the winter boot, holiday and snow season. Hence we figured it might be a good idea to introduce some snowy adventures. Here are 3 of the top Snowshoe adventures you should attempt this winter that can be found in your own backyard.
- Snowshoe Grind: Not as steep as the Grouse Grind, this trail starts with a gondola ride up Grouse Mountain. The first portion is mostly flat, moving you past the Grouse Mountain ice rink, as well as the Peak chair lift. However, once you hit the back country sign you're in for a sweat as the trail continues at varying levels of steepness until you reach the top. On a sunny day you'll be rewarded with majestic views of the city, as well as the Grouse backcountry, including Crown Mountain and the Lions.
- Hollyburn Mountain: Yes you can snowshoe the trails in the Cypress Mountain Nordic area, but why not attempt a longer trail that graces its borders and hence is complimentary. Best attempted on a weekday, as parking on weekends can be challenging, this trail starts just past the turnoff to the Nordic skiing area. At 7.5 kms it's a fair distance to cover, but the views from the top are amazing. You may even get a whisky jack to sit on your head or eat out of your hand.
- Dog Mountain: This well marked trail rewards you with views of the city and Mount Baker in the distance. It's a short distance from the Mount Seymour parking lot and has little elevation gain. Perfect for beginners. Snowshoe rentals are available at Mount Seymour.
